Which Transistors to get where 200 < hfe < 300 ?

I'm building another superfuzz as a backup and need to order some parts, so I figured I'd also try to get Q's in the "correct" gain range.
What would you recommend?

The only Q's that I have on hand are either below 200 hfe or above 450 hfe.

Thanks,

Bill

There are some AC126 transistors on Ebay. Measured for hfe between 200-230 with low leakages. item #380092877821
Never dealt with that seller, but feedback seems good.

:-\ I always believed Superfuzz uses silicon tarnsistorrs. I´ve used medium power transistors (TO-220 case or somemthing) on one or two Fuzz Faces, had those in the junkbox and they are easy to measure with multimeter if they are Si

Hi,

AC 126 for a SuperFuzz? Nope, wouldn't be the right choice. Why do people always think, that only a fuzz sounds good with those germanium trannies? Furthermore never no SuperFuzzes have been made with germanium transistors! For a real good SuperFuzz you'll need some mid gainy NPN silicon trannies - as the author already implemented in his post - , let's say somthing like BC550A which tend to have hfe 110-220 or better the BC549B (hfe 200-450).

yeah, definitely want silicon ... would be good to have CBE orientation too

Hi
one thing to look for is high Ft.  So very fast switches often have low hFE.
You'd probably land in that region with a 2N2222A, or an older 2N3904.
Many older fuzzes (e.g. Fuzzrite, Bosstone) has transistors with hFE in the 120 to 200 range.  That makes power devices (TIPs, BD139s, even MJE3055s).
It has got to the stage that many contemporary power trannies with modestv output (say 1 to 5W) manage hFE of 200 or even more.

Hi,

in my last SuperFuzz build I used some BC338 with hfe all around 350. It just works great with them. Don't remember about the Pinout, if it was EBC or CBE, but that shouldn't matter you can urn them around until the unit works. In my prevouis build I used som 2n3904 with hfe ~150 - also worked great though they tended to be a bit noisier then the BCs.
