NJM072M (SMD)

I have a question about SMD chips.  I messed up my last order with Mouser and ordered the NJM072M (SMD version) instead of the "D" (DIP) version.  I was wondering if there is anything I can do with these or should I just skip it and send them back for the "D" s.  I guess I was thinking there might be an adapter of some kind to use the SMD ones as if they were DIP.

I saw what looks like an adapter at Futurlec:

http://www.futurlec.com/SMD_Adapters.shtml

but I would still have to solder them in, right?  (I under stand that I would be "wasting" 12 of the 20 pins).  I just don't think it's possible - these things are way tiny and not scaled for human use - robots only.  My soldering is only ok at its best - no way could I do that.

If anyone has any ideas/suggestions to use these please let me know - or I guess I'll just send them back.

Thanks -

Too much messing around for me, I'd either return them in exchange for DIP ones or just order some more (DIP versions!)...you could probably use any dual opamp though 4558's etc...

Andre

I accidentally ordered some SMD 12F629 PIC processors a couple of months ago and only because I did not want to wait for the DIP versions I made a couple of 8 pin SMD to DIP adaptors like the one  in this picture:

I'm not sure if you know how to do your own PCB's, but if I can email you the "layout" if you want, although I think it's easier for you  to take WelshWonders advice and just order the right ones or use some substitute.  :)

Thanks WW and Andre -

Andre - it looks way above my head!  How did you solder those tiny things?!!  :icon_eek:  I would be blind trying to see what I was doing (even with my magnifier/visor thingy).

WW, your right - too much hassle.  I bought about 20 - I'll just send them back for DIPs instead of tying to mess around with them.  This was for (among other things) a Guv'Nor.  Do you know if I can use the 4558 in the Guv'Nor build?  It says TL071/72 and it only uses 1 of the op-amps.  The pin outs are different for the 71 vs 72 though.  Are they the same for the 4558 & 72?  I don't have any data sheets handy.  I was going to do it on perf so I'm not stuck with a PCB layout.  I suppose you could just do some jumpering to make it work with a PCB too.

Funny, I ordered the NJM386BL on the same order.  These are SILs not DIP.   Not what I wanted but that's less of a prob.  And might work out well.  I was going to build the Ruby with a Big Daddy for a pre-amp.  With the SILS on Perf I'm thinking I can just put them side by side - I'm still working on the layout.  I'll post when I figure out how.

I suppose I could put them in the gallery here and just link it right?  Will that work?  Is it allowed?

Thanks for your all your input -

Most any dual opamp will work for most circuits.  The most common thing to watch out for is the input impedance of the opamp, the TL072's is high, and the 4558's isn't.  So if there's nothing buffering before the opamp, you might lose some signal integrity.
