it will take a quick 5 seconds with your DMM to test the switch. If you don't have a DMM then just use an LED, a buzzer, or something similar.

Failing that, you could find a 9 volt battery, clamp one side to a pole and the other to your tongue. From the throw that you expect it to be, clip that to your tongue and you should feel something when you alternate the switch. Maybe this is the least practical method?

How would i test the switch with a LED , how would i know which way it goes in by doing this , newbie confused .  :icon_redface:

aron , thanks for the info on switches , have a better understanding upon how they work , seems to me that the L should be on the left side as you look at when its in the enclosure, is this correct ? that way the 1(1st set of poles would be on the top) ?

Possibly, but the meter is the only way to be sure. You pretty much have to use a meter in this hobby. Any cheap digital one should do.

May sound silly , but how would i go about checking the switch on a multi meter , how would i set the meter & what would i be looking for to make sure the switch would be installed the right way .  :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

my article explains how a DPDT works with a diagram. link

using the continuity tester on your dmm you will be able to confirm which way everything goes. if you don't have a continuity tester then you can use an ohmmeter set to a really low resistance range,

Set your meter on continuity (it may even beep when a connection is made). Then touch the terminals that you expect to have a connection. If your meter beeps, you guess correct. Now press the switch again and confirm that continuity has been changed and other other set of lugs are connected.

A few minutes will confirm and teach you how a switch works.

got a MM today , a Craftsmen , very nice , beeps like crazy at every pole on the DPDT switch i touch , numbers flyin ' , wish i knew how to use it , lol.....now how do i check the switch for the right positioning , want mine the way it is on the GGG layout , can this switch be put in any way like a blue 3PDT , please help ?

On a dpdt there are 6 terminals.

We could separate them in two rows of 3.

In one position, the middle ones are connected with the lower ones. When stomped, or whatever. the middle terminals are connected to the higher terminals. Grab the manual of your DMM, set it for continuity, or the lowest ressistance possible, and check how the switch works, and who is connected with whom.. It's easier if you write conclusions while you make your tests, so you don't forget.

If it's a DPDT, you can't wire it wrong if you're checking vs a layout.

If it's a 3PDT you actually can, because it has the shape of a square.

Hope it helps

bye bye
