Cheesy sounding Guvnor?

Guys, something strange happened to me recently.
In ~2003 I built myself a Marshall Guvnor (from the GGG layout). I used to love this circuit. I had it on the board for a couple of years (2003-2005). Then a friend of mine asked me to buy it, and I've let it go for the cost of parts. Recently I decided to build it again, since I loved it so much. I used all the exact components as specified by the schem (as I'm sure I did last time).
MY GOD! :icon_eek:
Its a shrill, overcompressed, buzzy distortion!
What happened? Have I been too spoiled by nice and dynamic sound of BSIABII?

Has anyone had similar experiences? Even with other circuits?

I've never built a Guvnor, but had a similar experience with a Guvnor 2.  I quite liked it initially, but over several years grew to hate it.  It does the high gain thing somewhat well, but the lower gain tones are BAD.  The BSIABII does the high gain thing as well as the Guvnor 2, but will also do low gain very well.  It would be very interesting to build a BSIABII with a Guvnor tone section, might give the best of both worlds.
