Weird switching phenomenon

Hey,

I'm trying to switch between 2 pots wired in series, used as variable resistors in a gain control (Mosfet boost, to ground). Outside lugs are wired to the wipers.  I just have a DPDT shorting out the first pot - signal should bypass this short and go into the 2nd pot, right?  This only works if I keep my foot on the DPDT...when I let it up, no gain change.  The switch is fine with a DMM, no issues there - reading resistances at the board where the gain exits and returns shows expected readings with switch engaged & disengaged.   I'm wondering if there is some other problem; maybe someone has hit upon this issue before?  This feels like a newbie thing, lol   8)
