my brother wants this to have a different type of fuzz pedal for his bass.
this pedal is used on the bass in the radiohead song "exit music (for a film)"
i have found all the parts for it on small bear, but i dont know what transistors to get.
the ones on the schematic say this:  C536F7G
are those still made?  does it matter what kind of transistor i get?

all help is wanted, thanks

nick.

I think most low to med HFE NPN transistors should work.  Socketing transistors is always a good idea so you can compare their sounds.

I highly recommend you put a 100k pot at the bottom of the Y at the right side of the schem much like the pedal below:

Also, this chart shows similar fuzzes and might give you some ideas for modding the pedal if you choose to do so.

Heres a vero layout for you...

and a perfboard layout... (w/ added scoop mod)

I think the Ge transistor may not be a good idea; the circuit is biased for a Si transistor.  The 2N4401 should work fine.  Other options would be 2N2369, 2N3904, 2N5088, and maybe even MPSA18.  The last two might not work, but would be be interesting to try if you socket the transistors so you can try different ones.  I am not smart enough to guess how much difference the different transistors will make, so if you just want to buy one type the 4401 should work.

Many of the original Shinei pedals used 2SC828s, so you might try that one also, but it almost certainly won't be any different from the ones listed above, and it costs more.

yeah, i also support the idea of socketing and testing different transistor flavors..

beyong less or more gain, i've encountered some transistors soo prone to make a 'resonant' sound.. very akin to a fuzz of this characteristics
