Another Cap question

OK, usually for the input and output caps on an effect (mainly fuzz, distortion, OD), I tend to use film caps.
For tone control, I use ceramic.

What do you all favor and why.
Or should I change my thoughts?

Poly all around, occasionally ceramic for low (pF) values.  A lot of people think the ceramics "degrade" your tone a bit...they do have a little bit of a non-linear response and allow a bit more hiss, which is a book in itself.   I tend to think "old" sounding when I use them in tone stacks.
In the end, it's a pretty subjective choice.  Poly caps have a 'high quality, brighter' reputation, and ceramic a 'vintage' mojo.   If you search, you'll probably find a debate on this in the forum, or over at AMZ's website.
If it works for you, don't change anything, lol

I use silver mica for small values.

Poly unless I can't find it, then ceramic.

I had heard that ceramics were "grittier" which is the reason I choose them for tone controls in fuzz boxes for example

Ceramics can sound grittier.
For a vintage type fuzz it may be just the ticket.
It really depends on the circuit.
Usually the biggest difference in hearing the effect of the cap
material is to use all of one type of cap.

The main downside to ceramic caps is that sometimes they are (and can become)
microphonic and you can tap on the box and hear them ringing in higher gain builds.
A lot of old boxes used them exclusively so they can't be too bad  :icon_biggrin:
