I've read they have a "shelf life".  If that's true, then why are they still used.  Is it the sound or use that attracts people to them?

They do have a shelf life, and a definite wear-out mechanism.

The only reason people have ever used them is that they have a shelf and working life that is years and sometimes decades long, and they offer much, much better capacitance per weight and capcitance per volume than other types of caps, as well as being cheaper per capacitance-volume product.

That is, people live with the limitations because of the other advantages.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Thanks for the comments.  I use them.  I'm not trying to say I can't follow directions.  I was just wondering.  I think I got that from GGG.  He never said don't use them, so don't get mad at him.  I just want some know how and why.
