  Besides availability and both are 9v regulators, any reasonable differences ?
  Application: Spyder PS.

78L09: L is for low current. TO-92 package, can deliver about 100mA.
7809: TO-220 package, can deliver up to about 1 amp.

For a Spyder PS, I doubt that you would be drawing more than 100mA from a single leg of the PS.
