I have placed pin numbers in the schematic below.  Am I correct in the pinout if I use a TL072?

The Tone God

No. The + and - are non-inverting and inverting inputs, not power.

So for power pin 4 is ground, pin 8 is 9v.

For U1 pin 2 is -, pin 3 +, and output is pin 1.

For U2 pin 6 is -, pin 5 is +, and output is pin 7.

No the pins are like this looking at the opamp from the front
                _____
output   1|       |8   9 volts
- input   2|       |7 output
+ input  3|       |6 - input
Ground  4|____|5 + input

So on the schematic
pin 4 should be pin 2
pin 8 should be pin 3
pins 6 and 7 are the other way round
Then pin 8 goes to 9 volts and pin 4 goes to ground. The power and ground pins are not shown on the schematic but need connecting up.

EDIT: The Tone God beat me to it but I like my diagram so I'll post it anyway :)

Thanks guys.  I need to take some time to really learn this stuff.

Wait so I put pin 8 to a straight 9V source voltage?

Hey Matt, for a simple but VERY cool first opamp build, try my "Mr Drive" in my gallery,

I think that Richard Bloop also did a vero layout for it in his too.

Its' a single opamp IC so LM741 or TL071 etc
In pin 3 , loop pin 2 and 6 , 6 output and power is pin 7 , ground pin 4 68pf cap across pins 1&8
which is a compensation cap, not required with a TL071.
