Anybody got a decent source for 3-4"? I'm looking to put a Ruby-ish amp in a coffee can, or maybe a few if it works well. I miss when RS carried stuff like that.

I know you're a high falutin' lawyer and all :icon_lol:, but check the curb for throwaway plastic computer speakers.  Great source of small speakers.

runmikeyrun

agreed.  The stuff at RS and electronics stores are pretty crappy.  Another source might be boom box speakers.  Some even decent quality parts like rubber surrounds.

Those sources are good, but they are hit or miss--and I haven't hit lately. A couple of years ago my wife tossed a couple of boomboxes that I hadn't gotten around to salvaging--that still hurts. That's why I'm looking for a buy source.

i have used these for a few HT surrounds that i built.  They sound good and they are on sale.

Also if your interested i have around 60 of these 3" speakers they are 16ohm 3w speakers.  You can have a few if you want to pay for the shipping.  I purchased them 3 years ago and haven't found enough projects to use them in.

Hey, Crazyike, thanks! The link you gave was actually for a 4" speaker, which looks really good for the project, has a decent high-end rolloff (a good thing) and is 8 ohms--BUT I doubt I can actually mount it, since the OD of the can is 4". They do have similar 3" (I want to stay away from the coaxial speakers) for $11--FR 100-7000hz, not too efficient--I think I will order one. Parts Express looks like a cool source to have in general.

I may get back to you about your surplus stash, though--if this works, I might want to try one with speakers at both ends, so 16-ohmers should work. Thanks again.

Keep an eye out for old Compaq workstations.
They used 16 ohm 3" 5W speakers in them that are really good quality and look like those in the link (parts-express). I built a raging 4x3 half-stack with them  ;D

Ha! Just yesterday I took a 3" speaker from a radio my 4yr old destroyed to replace a blown one in a stuffed bear that plays Christmas songs...

High falutin'--well, ok. As for being a lawyer--we'll see what these times leave of that.  :-[

You gotta post some pics of that half-pint half-stack.

Here's a 3" HiFi speaker project ... This is a small and inexpensive fullrange bookshelf speaker that uses the Aura NS3-194-8E fullrange driver. The drivers were on sale for $10.50US from Madisound.
