The potentiometers that came in the ITS8 kit have a small metal tab right next to the threads, sort of on the edge of the pots casing. The fact that this is protruding outwards lead me to believe I needed to screw on the nut before placing the pot on the inside of my stompbox, but each pot came with only one nut, so I could not secure it to the case besides using the knob, which still leaves it a little wobbly.

Am I going about this completely wrong or something?

OT: I broke a .02 uF capacitor and they didnt have any replacements at radioshack, so the guy told me to solder two .01 uF capacitors together and then use that and I did, but since I left my cable in the music department of the school down the street, I haven't been able to test the finished product of my stompbox, and I was just wondering if this would make a difference in the performance of my device.

Considering that this is my first electronics project that I've ever gone all the way with, any extra advice would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks in advance  ;)

Snap the tab off with some pliers.

Get the cable and try out the sucker. If it sounds good you`re done.

That small metal part will go thru a small hole near the main hole of the potentiometer. It is used to assure that the potentiometer won't move when you turn the knob. You can eliminate this (I personally do it) as long as you use a locking washer or tighten the nut firmly in place.

For the capacitor question, yes you can use two 0.01uF as long as they are in parallel.

Thanks guys! That was really fast. And yea I was just hesitant to break it off because I had no idea if it served some important purpose or not.
