I have a BOSS A/B pedal the little blue one but its a 3v pedal but I want to power it with my power supply but is it as simply as putting the relevant resistor in series with the 9v or do I have to go the power regulator route as Its a bit cramped in there

I believe you could just wire the appropriate resistor in series from a DC jack (which I assume you'll be installing) to get the 3 volts.  Might want to also consider the voltage divider route; since you're not using a 9v battery it doesn't really matter if you "waste" voltage by sending it to ground.  You could do this with 2 resistors, or a trimpot.

Just wire a 20k resistor to V+ and a 10k to ground forming a voltage divider. The formula for voltage division is:

Vout=Vin (R2/R1+R2)

For Vin=9V R1=20k R2=10k then Vout=3V
