Boss OC-2 doing very weird things

I have a Boss Octave pedal and it's doing something very weird. When I turn the effect on it will play the octave lower but it will then switch up a few steps and then bounce around back and forth. It's not going all the way back to the regular signal. Anyone ever run into this problem? Any known fixes? Thanks.

its called bad tracking.

is this a normal function of the pedal? i've played a few other octave pedals and they didn't do that.
