What fuzz do you think this is?

There is a guy that has wanted me to make him a fuzz for a a few months now, and he wants what is used in the song 'blackwater' by the meatpuppets.

On other forums and what I gathered from the net is that it's a Bug Muff, but he swears that it isn't.

I really need your guys' opinion on this. I'm totally stumped  :icon_confused:

In my opinion I don't hear a fuzz at all. Remember this is the studio. Engineers do wonders with EQ.

This sounds like an old Marshall Plexi to me.

I just designed a new fuzz circuit! It almost sounds a little different than the last fifty fuzz circuits I designed! ;)

I don't have an answer, but I do have advice. If it were me, I wouldn't tell someone that a given pedal will sound like a particular artist or recording. You can't guarantee that. I would have them specify what pedal they want you to build, you build it, and they pay you.  Don't forget your non-refundable deposit to cover the cost of materials in case they back out (in writing with their signature).

Yea    seems pretty close.   He is the one that has been referring to it as a fuzz.

@ John    Yea    that goes without saying about the non refundable deposit. I explained the 'risk' to him.

I googled the Meat Puppets and saw a post from someone who saw them play in 2007. He described his gear with detail. He stated that he was using a Peavey Bandit 112 amp.

I then googled that amp and found an Asian guy doing a demo. The Bandit seems to get a variety of sounds. There was a setting where he turned up the "lead" knob which sounded pretty close to the sound in the Meat Puppets video.

So all you have to do is build your friend an amp! Done!

Hahaha    I'll just convince him that it's a plexi  :icon_twisted:    I showed him the plexi video and he says that it sounds just like the song. I think this comes down to ethics now. :-\     He's happy with the plexi sound but apparently it's a bandit.    What to do, what to do, what to do?

I like nonsensical thrashy bullshit punk.   DRI, Bad Brains, Cryptic Slaughter, things like that.

You can tell him that the amp is probably what creates the distictive sound, but if he thinks a Plexi will get him close, you'll build him one. But let him know that you can't guarantee that it will make him sound like a Meat Puppet.

Ethics: what to do, what to do...
Think of it like this: Your expertise is building fine pedals, not figuring out which pedal will make someone sound like a certain artist. Charge for your expertise and don't take money for things that you don't can't absolutely without a doubt deliver.  You can deliver a great pedal, but you can't reliably deliver a specific artist's sound.

I thought it sounded like a Big Muff

but maybe with a fet recovery stage to get that little extra crunch

markeebee

Just make something like an Electra Distortion and put a sticker on it saying "Meat Puppets Fuzz".  That'll do it.

Oh yeah, and charge him 200 dollars.

i think they use a fulltone OCD, but no doubt feeding tube amp, which is where most of the tone probably comes from

saw the brothers meatpuppet open for STP a couple years ago...they were @#$%ing brilliant, as always.
very twisted...from stuff like this song to punk metal renditions of amazing grace in the same show...

just a closer walk with thee into some protopunk metal was an awesome sight to behold. my girl hated them,
i absolutely loved them.

they are twisted "right".

Which tone are we talking about? The tone on the studio track Backwater? Or the tone he uses live?

My experience is whoever produces the recording has a lot to say about what gear is used. I've seen guitar players gear that they use live tossed aside after time is spent trying to get a sound, only to try different gear that is available at the studio or renting gear from the many reputable music related rental companies such as SIR.  http://www.sir-usa.com/

Comparing a studio sound to live gear is.... well....apples and oranges.
