When playing my guitar (Yamaha Pacifica 112) say a clean sound all effects bypassed, if I can roll the volume down on the guitar and get a smooth drop in volume as you would expect it to behave.

If say I am playing through my muff or my fuzz face, and I want to roll the vol down a touch to clean things up a little.  I find that if I tweak the knob a touch its got a great effect.  I mean going from say 10 on the scale to 9.5.  and then once I get past 9 and lower the sound is quieter than it should be and seems muddy.

I am stumped on this one any ideas.  I can only think that somethings loading the pickups too much

A proportion resistor could be calculated from the value of the pot, maybe it's a standard taper..
maybe a 10k or 22k resistor at the FF input would make the first portion of your volume control less touchy].
{Different taper volume pot...nahh, perhaps a tapering resistor across the signal path lugs of the pot, I guess about 1/4 or 1/2 the pot's value, I just put up with touchy, my old EPI LP used to be really touchy, this ones not as bad that way.
Typical FF...volume pot also controls gain, as such the taper remains the same, but the effect may be bunched up quite a bit when nearing 8.6 - 9 or so.

Convention creates following, following creates convention.

The pot might be just getting old.  Why not just replace the pot.  They are more likely to fail if don't use it that much and just sit on 10.  I had this problem as I usually use a volume pedal in my effects loop.
