Another dumb question:  I have a 47 uF radial lead cap that doesn't indicate which end is positive.  It does have a ring crimped around the circumference on one end, does this mean anything?

Thanks,

Sorry, that would be an axial cap.  Both leads are the same length.

The end nearest the "crimp" is usually the positive.... but, here's a better way to tell; the Negative end will be connected directly to the outer metal shell of the cap and the Positive will be insulated from it usually with a piece of rubber or some other insulating type material.
So, on one end you'll see all metal with the lead attached directly to it - that's the Negative.
The other end you'll see rubber with the lead going into it, into the interior of the cap - that's the Positive.
