Metal Simplex: Which layout is best?

Help!

I've tried at least 10 times to build the Metal Simplex, and I've tried both layouts on this forum, one by Xavier, and one by JPM83.

I've had zero luck with either, and I'm ready to pull out my hair!  Wait, I shave my head, so I guess that won't work!

Based on more knowledgable users than me,which of these very simple layouts is better?  Are there mistakes in either of them that I'm missing, due to lack of knowledge?
