What type of semiconductors I need to build Sili-Face I?

It states the preferred type(s) on the web page.

but you can use 2n3904, 2n5088, 2n4401, 2n5089, 2n2222, etc, etc...basically most general purpose npn silicon transistors

To quote the Sili Face web page:

While almost any transistors worked well in my prototype of the Sili-Face, I prefer 2N5088 transistors that measure around 400 hFE.

So yes, you can use 2 of the same, or different ones. Why don't you build it using sockets for the transistors, and try different ones to see what YOU like ?
