Hi
Can anyone recommend a medium price, high quality 8 inch speaker?

I'm 90% sure that I'm going to buy a Vox AD15VT from the local pawn shop (for about US$140).  It's just for fun, so it doesn't have to be a great amp, but the little 8 inch speaker doesn't sound good (the mids are ok but the lows and highs lack definition).

I'd prefer to keep it simple and portable (e.g. for holidays in the van), so a "speaker out" and a 12" is not my prefered solution.

thanks for any suggestions

You could look at Webers, I've heard nothing but praise from everybody who has dealt with him or used his products. Shoot him off an email and see what he has to say.

Check out the Weber Signature series, inexpensive, and you can get it in Alnico, Ceramic, and even a Blue with British cone in either type magnet.

The Weber stuff is great.

I've had good experience with the reissue Jensens as well.

A Weber Alnico Blue Pup 8 is only $35 - I'd probably go for that. He had a couple of these different "Pulsonic" type cones and they sound really cool with a small speaker - way more low-end than you'd expect, but I don't see any speakers for sale that use it, nor is it listed on the recone parts page. I'd say it's something worth bugging them about because it they sound cool.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I've checked out some Webers, and they seem to fit the bill.

Gee, the prices you guys pay in the US are so much less than what we pay in Oz:

I suppose that's the cost of living in Paradise. :icon_wink:

Why in the world would they cost so much more? If you buy directly from Weber the price isn't any different. The only thing that might be high would be the shipping, but if you had it shipped slow I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad. Those little 8 inch speakers aren't heavy at all - I don't see how the shipping could cost that much. There's no way it should cost $75+ to ship a little speaker, that's just crazy. Where did you get those prices?

Hi
those Weber prices are from a supplier of classic amps and speakers. The sort that have a "Retro" sound  :icon_wink:.
The Jensen price was much the same for that supplier and another that is an "Electronic valve and toob company"  :icon_wink:.

Your hair would spontaneously combust if you saw what we pay for Celestions here!

I don't suppose anyone knows a good place in the UK to get replacement speakers? Or how much shipping is from weber?

soulsonic

I can't give any quotes on their shipping rates, but I can say that they ship stuff internationally all the time. They use FedEx exclusively, so I suppose you could maybe get an estimate from the FedEx website.
