Hot harmonics octave

hi all, i just build frank clarke´s hot harmonics, it sounds good, but theres something strange..the octave knob acts as a second gain knob, and cuts the sound at zero...at max position, it gives more gain but no octave is percieved.....its just me or is the way it is???

Last time i read something about the Hot Harmonics, i kind of understood that it's a overdrive pedal of some sort, which also has some octave sounds in it? Like, it's not designed as a octave effect. I might remember wrong though, anyone else know anything more about this one?
