Tutorial for Beginners?

I am starting to understand how to read schematics and translate that onto a layout.
I am also starting to understand what each component does.

What I dont grasp is exactly what is going on as the circuit moves along as it applies to the effect that is being produced.

For example:
Why are some resistors sent to ground why others stay in the circuit?

A simple walk through of whats happening in a distortion circuit would be of immense help.

Any known references that do this?
