The first is a normal treble bleed as in some guitars and amps...

The !third! is a midhump-bleeder. Maybe usefull in overdrive circuits?

The second is a loudness control: at full the response is flat, in between you have a mid-cut to boost treble and bass to compensate for our ears' natural oversensitivity to speech at low levels (telephone effect). It's simple, yet the problem with this thing is that you need a big inductor for large pot impedances.

  I think that 'problem' can be worked around easily enough.

How about a gyrator instead of the inductor?
