Buffer pls explain this (I'm Italian so some trouble with the language)

Hi when I look at the word buffer I can see a lot of things called that way, something with tho wheels to clean shoes, part of a train, polisher, cushion, even dogs called buffer.

So could you pls explain what a buffer is doing to the guitar signal, is it a sort of sustain (I'm thinking about cushion, so signal don't drop) ?
