I built a TS808 from the GGG site. It had alot of noise in it that I was able to reduce by using shielded cable and building a good clean power supply. There still is a fair amount of hiss when the pedal is on. I used an audio probe and found that the noise is coming from the 4558 chip. Is there anything that can be done to quiet this? I haven't tried a different chip yet (tomorrow's project). I guess I'm asking in advance in case I don't find a chip that is quieter.

4558s are hi speed opamps as said in the spec... i wonder if you can find hi-speed low noise versions...?
i dont have any hiss problems with my 4558 tubereamer[ROG TS stripdown]
Look at it this way- everyone rags on air guitar here because everyone can play guitar.  If we were on a lawn mower forum, air guitar would be okay and they would ridicule air mowing.

Try TL072 sound tubey and more less noisy too. I have 808 clone with this. My original TS9 has TA7558 but I replace it with JRC4558 and become noisy with 808 mod. But  as I use the TL072 it's less and sometimes  I use it  in series with clone. First clone then original you 'll find more tweak settings between and nice sounds :icon_biggrin: (Two tubescreamer in a row)

Don't know if you've actually narrowed it to the 4558 (which are not known for their high fidelity/low noise!!  Glorified 741), but if there are ceramic caps and long ground leads on the board that will contribute to noise.  Poly film are really good anywhere you're in the signal path.  I personally expect my OD/distortions to have some hiss....the guitar is like an antenna, it's a wonder we get any quality sound out of them at all!!   ;o)
