Orange Squeezer diode ?

I just breadboarded an OS...really like the mild compression, not so much as to 'breathe' or be very noticeable, but playing semi-clean stuff like "Long Train Runnin'" and Little Wing, I'm really seeing what this thing can do for it's simplicity and why it's so famous!    Question: I subbed a 1N34 diode in for the 1N100; anyone know if this will make any difference?  Sounds good as is, so I am guessing they are close enough?
Thx,

Mike

Those germaniums are mostly the same. If you put a 1N4148 in place of germaniun it will probably increase the output.

HOTGUIT

hi
those ger. diodes are very similar (i dare say they are the same thing)
I prefer using a 1N100 in place of a 1N34a (my O.S. is built with a 1N100) but it's up to you
using a Sil diode you obtain more gain and the pedal is no more an O.S. compressor, it is another thing.

Thank you for the replies....I will use the Ge '34A diode I have in there now, as the original used Ge for a reason.  The Vf must be quite similar to the 1N100.    I really enjoy this pedal, and now know why everyone has one!  Time to make a pretty enclosure...

I agree, a Si diode might make it more of a boost than a compressor, or at least would really change the character of the thing.

I made an OS both ways, one with an SI diode and one with a Ge diode. The SI OS is cleaner sounding and compresses a little more than the Ge diode OS. The Ge OS has more distortion in the signal. They both sound good.

I used a 1n34 in mine and use it on my bass.  It works great along with the ROG Mr. EQ and the J.H. Zombie chorus.

Thanks guys...I went with the '34, sounds good.  I use it with a TS808 drive=0 level=10 to punch my tube amp, a Tonemender for leads and LPB-2 for midboost.  Haven't figured out WHERE in the chain to put it, but that will come on its own, lol...  Nice little build,  2 days from breadboard to enclosure.

If any of the various makers of the OS or clones can actually find a 1N100 diode at this point in time, in sufficient quantities to produce large volumes of pedals, they have my undying respect.  My guess is they are also using either 1n34 or 1N60 or 1N270 diodes.

HOTGUIT

Hi Mark.
are you looking for 1N100 diodes?

Mark Hammer

No. They just aren't nearly as available as the ones listed.  I suppose if it is still possible to buy SSM2040, ua726, LM4739, and SAD512D/4096 chips somewhere, it is also possible to find 1N100 diodes too.  Just not in the sorts of quantities that a manufacturer would feel comfortable depending on.

Cool...hey, I have read that if you turn the trim pot all the way down, you lose all signal...in my build, that's not the case - there is still signal present no matter where it's set.  I just set it up for the nominal 1.6 volts, and read 4.3V on the opamp output.  The circuit sounds good, chords are much more equal in volume to single-note lines.    Does this indicate an error, or is it just normal?
Thx....
