Hey there, I have an old teisco pickup that I need to get into (faulty). The bottom is glued to the cover. Is there a graceful way to open this up without making it look like it's been in a car accident? Eg heat the glue? cut glue? I've been trying but fear I'm going to break it.Thanks

A hair dryer may provide enough heat to soften the glue without damaging anything else.  At the moment the rigid glue requires so much force to pry apart the housing that there is the risk of whatever you use to pry accidentally tearing the coil.  If the glue is softer and more pliable, less force may be enough to do what needs to be done.

Just a question here...if the pickup is wax potted, wouldn't heating it up be a bad idea?

Arn C.

If the pickup is potted with wax and you heat it up, it will be fine.   It seems he needs to repair the pickup, so if there is wax he would have to melt it and once repaired remelt some more wax to repot the pickup.

Peace!

Thanks all. I have a low powered heat gun so I'll give it a try!

Mark Hammer

Be VERY careful and judicious with the heat.  Many of those older Japanese guitars and pickups use soft plastic for bobbins and if you heat them too much they WILL warp.  Fender pickups were designed to be repairable, Teisco not so much.

Thanks Mark, I'll start with the hair dryer and work up from there. I hope it works, with a resistance reading of 540k and no sound I have no other option. All the best

If the hairdryer doesn't cut it and you can't risk the heat damage, you can always try a little dremel or better yet, die grinder surgery. A cutting/grinding disc might do the trick but this is far from left field not really seeing where you're coming from.

Hair dryer did the trick, opened smoothly! Thanks all
