What DIY overdrives do you guys think are good for a slightly gritty/growly sound when used with bass?

I tend to prefer pedals with discrete FET's for OD, but if theres a diode clipper out there that sounds really nice with bass, I'd consider it too.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but i just built and verified my Bass Grinder (Sounds samples soon!), a design by me, inspired by the simple, yet great bazz fuss from ROG. It has a switchable booster in front, which can take it into high-gain areas too. check it out!

EDIT: Gallery down, search for "bass grinder" in the gallery when it comes back.  ;)

Although I don't use any distortion or overdrive pedals on bass the times I've tried I was always dissapointed by the loss of low end. I haven't gotten around to it but making a blendable effects loop would allow you to make just about any fuzz/distortion work without killing off the lows. Could throw a wah in there too...
