So, I'm ordering the parts for my first small builds and need to order some caps. Here are the values I need:

47nF x 1
47pF x 1
220nF x 4
150nF x 1
10uF x 1
47uF x 2
100uF x 2
10nF x 2

But small bear stocks so many different types of caps; which do I use for which values? Some are high voltage and some are low. Most values are given in mF as well so how do I convert the values I have?

And finally, although unrelated to caps, which types of resistors do you guys prefer?

Sorry, I'm sure these questions are all really tedious and have been asked before, so thanks for helping a guy out!

Hanglow

mF = uF

1uF = 1000nF
1000pF=1nF

so 220nF is often called a .22 cap, as in .22uF

Types- doesn't matter really, just note whether or not  they are polar. These are typically over 1uF.

Voltage value - just make sure they are rated over the supply voltage. But you don't need 600V caps in a pedal...

Resistors - I get metal film ones. they look nicer :D

Have a look at the wiki, I'm sure there is more info on there for you...

Hanglow said it all really but another way to say it is...

uF =  microfarad = 1*10^-6

nF = nanofarad = 1*10^-9

pF = picofarad = 1*10^-12

As long as the cap is over the voltage it'll be supplied with your ok. I normally leave myself a bit of wiggle room with this taking into account the tolerances and safety measures.  :icon_lol:

Usually if you need anything over 1uF it's worth going for aluminium electrolytic caps (Most of these are polar). Ceramic are good for really small values (pF). Anything in between there are loads of options; polyester film, polystyrene, silver mica, mylar, ceramic and paper. There are some good threads if you search and check the faqs too 'cause I guess there'll be some good advice there.

Some people often change aluminium electrolytic caps for tantalum in certain instances were the signal is affected directly from the cap. I've never bothered with with them so far but. I guess it's personal opinion. There's often  a lot of MOJO stuff that surrounds different caps so i hope that helps a bit.
