bipolar preamp cable

I've been looking at the Fet preamp cable here...  http://www.till.com/articles/PreampCable/index.html

I'm trying to build a self contained contact mic that plugs into a phantom powered XLR mic input.

I can't get JFETs locally so my question is could you do this using a bipolar transistor?

I'm sure you can. You may have to adjust the bias resistors, but the basic principle is the same.
