Wire that won't take solder?

I'm working on a Marshall compressor and some of the wires used in this thing won't take solder.
They look like they have some kind of black coating on the strands. That must be why they are in little plugs with crimp pins and soldered on the pins.

Any way to make these wires solderable or am I looking at replacing them? Some way to clean them?
Should I dip the ends of them in FeCl to etch them a little?
I'm soaking one of them in rubbing alcohol and I'll post back if it works.

Cheers

 Did you try flux?

I had the same problem twice- once trying to solder the wire inside a spark plug cable(squirrel or something ate thru it), and once trying to solder telephone wire...

I gave up on both...

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

I tried flux on it with no success, so I just replaced the wires themselves. It's a Marshall ED1 compressor so it's not like I need to retain vintage value or anything.

Thanks for the ideas though.
Between these and DeOxit I might put them to use when I'm working on something I want to keep as original as possible.
