Should my fuzz face crackle?

I have a silicon fuzz face on a breadboard and it crackles when I turn the volume knob on my guitar. Is this normal? I've tried three different guitars so I'm pretty sure it's not the pots. I'm using the Tantalus schematic:

Instead of the switchable output caps, I'm using a SWTC. Also, I'm using 2N2222 transistors. And I have a 2M2 pulldown resistor at the input.

Here are my voltages:

Q1
E: 0.0
C: 1.4
B: 0.6

Q2
E: 0.7
C: 5.5
B: 1.4

Thanks.

It is very likely that you are getting DC back out of the input to the effect. This could be a solder short on the input cap, a bum input cap, or an input cap put in backwards.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Ah, you're right! I had the pulldown resistor going to +V instead of ground. :icon_redface: Thank you!
