Could anyone suggest a simple OD with switchable comp. ?

I'd like to study an overdrive circuit with an integrated switchable compressor stage if such a thing exist.
Could any of you fine folks suggest a good candidate ?
What I am after is something Tube Screamerish possibly minus the buffers but with a compressor which can also boost the overall signal somewhat.
I guess I could always build a screamer/squeezer combination, but  i'd like to see something simpler. I'm sure there must be some shortcuts I could take instead of going to the great length of integrating two separate circuits on a common powersupply ?

Compression effect of diode in signal path, there was a FF Joe Davisson...hmm I even built it, have..@@Rate..
It had an Si diode [IIRC] facing toward input in the signal path, between input cap and base of transistor.
Then there are mimimalist Comps...minimal in parts count [starts at like ~12+ pcs. IIRC], but not in ability to be tweeked or compress.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

That sounds very minimalistic indeed.
I wish I had a breadboard...
Has anyone else tried something like this ?
