Anyone have experience putting clear lacquer on black Hammond boxes?

Hi

I'm wondering, do I need a primer if I am using a black Hammond 1590B enclosure and clear lacquer (Polyvine) or can I just coat directly onto the surface of the enclosure?

For this particular project I will not be using any labeling...

Thanks!

The only thing I don't like about laquer is that when it chips or dings it turns white.
With a black box this will be a nightmare.
The black on the box you have now is a powdercoat?
Why do you want to coat it again?

Poly usually means polyurathane which isn't laquer but an oil based varnish

hmmm.... hadn't thought about chips turning white.

as for the powder coat, I was hoping to layer the lacquer to give it more of a shine (the powder coat is the poly powder coat done by Hammond).

Polyvine is the name of the company, the actual product is an acrylic lacquer.  My hope was to coat it as the instructions say (3 coats followed by wet sand followed by 2 more coats with sanding in between & then polish with a car wax) for a glass-like gloss.   Maybe this isn't what I need...

Any other suggestions for a clear coat that is super super gloss with mirror like qualities?

thanks
