The Q&D Compressor project (at AMZ) uses the SSM2166 chip.  While the name of the project does not immediately draw your attention to it, the SSM2166 possesses excellent noise reduction properties that can be used without any compression being introduced if you feel like it.  I know that the price the chip commands ( http://www.smallbearelec.com/Categories.bok?category=ICs+-+Compressors%2FExpanders ) seems like a bit of a deterent, but it takes so little in addition to that chip to produce a high quality compressor/downward-expander that it is a lot more cost-effective than you would think from the price of the chip alone.
