The prices are all over the place on evilBay. I suppose I could order one from SmallBear but I like to buy local when I can. Anyone know any stores (bonus if they're in the Ottawa area) that carry step bits for drilling out holes in enclosures? I'm going to swing by Home Depot on my way home tonight but this doesn't seem like their bag.

Lowes and Home Depot carries a brand called Erwin. Maybe check out Princess Auto, Busy Bee, and Lee Valley too.

In the Ottawa area, you could give Busy Bee a call. They might have them. They had pin collets and really small bits in stock, and carry drill presses, metal working and woodworking tools and supplies. It's just over by the Science andTechnology Museum off of St Laurent.

I've seen steppers at Home Depot. Not really a "local" source though and they were crazy expensive. I haven't seen them anywhere else here (Montreal) but I haven't really looked that hard.

Honestly, if you are drilling aluminum, you can use wood drill bits assuming you drilled pilot holes and secure your box adequately. I use the flat ones to drill the bigger holes, say, 1/2" or more. Sure they may get dull quicker than a stepper would, but I can buy a lot of them for the ~$50 they wanted for the stepper at HD.

The one you need for making enclosures was about $20 for a unibit at Home Depot here in Ottawa. They did have more expensive ones but that was if you needed to make a hole bigger than what a 3pdt stomp switch needs.
I bought one and it goes through aluminum enclosures like butter. It also did 1/8" steel as well but I made sure to have oil on it and even then the bit did heat up.
