What delay to build?

Recommend me a good delay to build.
I guess around 1/2 second delay, possible hold function, maybe a sound on sound like a tape delay?
I could probably buy something like this cheap, even broken, but I was thinking of something to build to alleve my boredom at work.
I have a cheap Arion SAD delay pedal I could use for some parts if needed.

If you want hold then you want digital.

It doesn't have to have a "hold".....maybe a looper built into it?

If you want anything that continues to recycle the input signal more than just a few iterations, then it MUST be digital if you expect to maintain any sort of signal recognizability.
