Alright so just a little while back, I stumbled upon this site.  I had never heard of anyone building their own effects pedals before.  But the more I read, the more I researched pedals and schematics and layouts, the more I felt I had to build a pedal.  I've done some basic electronics stuff before, but we're talking perfboard and freeform stuff only.  Anyway, I went to a bunch of sites and listened to a ton of clips of DIY pedals.  I knew I wanted to make a distortion pedal, so that's what I looked for.  After comparing the MXR Distortion + and the Obsidian Overdrive for what could have been hours, I decided on the Obsidian.  I went looking for a schematic.  Luckily for me, there was one already on this site, http://www.diystompboxes.com/analogalchemy/sch/obsidian.html.  So now, after I have my schematic found and I know what parts I'm going to need, I'm thinking the only step left is to buy the parts and get going.  Then the problem came along.  What am I going to build the circuit on?  It seems like perfboard would be too bulky, and I would rather do a PCB, but there are 2 problems with that:
     1.  I've never actually etched a PCB before.
     2.  I can't find a PCB layout ANYWHERE!
I've heard that etching a PCB isn't too difficult, but the second problem is the killer.  I can't find ANYTHING PCB wise for the Obsidian, except for a few Obsidian Transistors (I really have no idea what the difference is..) and I have no idea how to design my own PCB.  Please help me out!

I use the PC perfboard found at Radio Shack.  They are really small and w/ a little cutting (if necessary) should easily fit into any enclosure you were thinking about putting it in.

Just to clarify, I was planning on building the mosfet version, but you can see that if you look at the schematics.  I'm now considering doing the transistor version (much easier to find layouts), but I have no idea what it sounds like.  Has anyone out there made either of these?  If so, which one sounds better?  Last, but not least, does anyone know where to find a sound clip of the transistor version?

Thanks.

All of Joe's stuff I have built sounded cool.  The Vulcan is another one to consider (it doesn't use mosfets), as is the Blackfire.   :icon_cool:
