Hey Everyone,

I know this is not Rocket Science, but hopefully someone can help.  I've created a layout of a Passive Direct Box that I have and the pic is below.  I've ordered some direct box transformers from Mouser, but they have 6 leads, instead of the transformer that's in the layout below.  Can you someone tell me how to wire the Mouser (Part #42TM018-RC) to fit my "Passive Direct Box Layout"?  Thanks for all of the help.

Just use the outer leads. Just so you know, the frequency bandwidth of that transformer is around 300Hz to 3.4KHz. You'd be missing some of the bass response. I've used them before in a project. I ended up replacing them with Whirlwind TRHLM transformers, more expensive but better bandwidth.

Does it matter where each lead goes? I.E.- lead 1 goes to the Tip of the input jack? I'm assuming that I would just cut off the two middle leads?

IIRC, that Xicon transformers have pins instead of leads so use: pin 1 => tip, pin 3 => sleeve, pin 6 => xlr pin 2, pin 4 => xlr pin 3. I don't think it matters much as long as you have the input going into the primary and the output coming from the secondary.

Anyway, I don't think that particular transformer is ideal for direct box application. In addition to the bandwidth issue I mentioned earlier, the impedance of the secondary winding is pretty high for use in a DI. It is more suited for isolation applications. The 42TM019-RC looks like a better candidate (if not for the bandwidth).

Just a quick FYI: pins 2 and 5 on that transformer are center taps. Center taps can make AC->DC transformers a little simpler, because you need only 2 diodes with a center tapped transformer, as opposed to 4 with a vanilla transformer. But, diodes are cheap anyway, so I guess that doesn't really matter.

Even if you don't use that transformer for your circuit, hold on to it. You'll certainly find a use for it somewhere
