Misbehaving Clipping Diodes

I have a TS kit that I built from GGG and I've been messing with the clipping diodes.  I recently added a Ge diode in series with Red LEDs and strangely the overall volume of the pedal went down.  This is confusing, because from my DIYstompbox research, it seams that the clipping threshold should be raised by adding more diodes in series?  Am I hearing this all wrong?  Does the sequence of diodes matter, meaing LED to 1n34a vs. 1n34a to LED?  I wouldn't think it would?

I'd guess the only explanations would either be a short somewhere or bad solder connection; or a faulty LED.

Check your thing and report back..
