I have 3 kinds of caps in my stores, all bought from Small Bear:  Grey box, red jellybean and light blue polar caps.  i'm wondering, will any circuit i make sound different if i use all box caps instead of jellybeans?  and can i use polar caps if i don't have that value in normal caps, and vice versa?  i wanna get a megapack of ceramics; can i use them in circuits when i don't have the box/jellybean/polar caps?

oh and what are the official names for all these yummy-sounding caps?    :D

You can use just about any cap anywhere, as long as it'll fit, and as long as it's close to the value you need.

Box caps are nice, but I use multilayered ceramics in almost every build now. They are tiny, so they fit anywhere, and the effect on sound by the type of cap used is negligible compared to what a different value will do.

As for noise, I've never had a problem with the caps I use, and I've never had microphonic ones. I recommend 'em.

thanks Josh - what do they look like?  could you post a photo maybe?

EDIT:  oh another question...what do 'monolithic' caps do?

Here you go:

I get mine from futurlec, and they're relatively inexpensive as long as you're willing to wait a month for them to arrive: http://futurlec.com/CapCerMono.shtml

I'll pay $.25 all day long for such minuscule 1uF non-polarized caps. :)

so, they're multilayered creramic?  different from monolithic?   sorry for the 20 q's   :-X

On futurlec, they're listed as monolithic multilayered. I'm assuming both terms fit these, although I don't know the technicalities behind the terms. I'm assuming monolithic means it's in a single 'block' of ceramic, and the multilayered part has to do with the layering of the materials that allows for such a small package.
