Trying to figure NPN gain w GEO device

The way I understood it was that for NPN gain to be checked all I would have to do was reverse the black and red battery wires and the red and black meter probes.

Am i missing something here?

Are you sure you've the pinout correct for the NPN's you're using?  They can differ from one transistor to another.

Most likely you have a wiring issue or a pinout issue.

Yes, all you have to do is reverse the battery, reverse the meter(even if you only do this mentally) AND make sure the new pinout is correct.

I was testing some of those  CV7112 black glass military germanium where the the dot could be emitter or collector.
