Anyone have any suggestions for some good bass effects?  The bassist in my band keeps asking.  A lot of the effects he tries out don't seem to work too well on bass.  He has a couple good overdrives, he's mostly looking for something pretty different.

bump. interested too.
so he doesn't want a fuzz?

fuzzo

not spectacular, but a tremolo can make a cool sound with a bass,  no ? Or a vibrato effect (pedal like boss vb2) ?

A ring modulator should be crazy enough  ;)

I suggested a ring modulator too, and he said the one he tried didn't seem to have a good response on the low notes of a bass.

He's not interested in a bass fuzz...  He's pretty happy with his overdrive and distortion.

Modify a CE-2B with a blend knob a crazy LFO and a "width" control.

Take your Bassist out for a huge meal of seafood before practice and watch him throw up.

Autowah, fuzz/wah, PWM style effects... whatever you want.  Bass players seem to be more willing to experiment with unusual effects (and new/unfamiliar technology in general) than guitar players.

(Going slightly off track)... I always thought this was odd.  I mean, guitar players are like "gimme an instrument from 1950 so I can express my rebellion and individuality" and bass players are like "my rig has built-in graphic EQ, compression, phase delayed subwoofer output, balanced inputs, and lights up like a spaceship, but I'll just stand back here with the drummer and keep everything in the pocket."

Stereotypes of course, but seriously, what's the deal?  Am I strange for being a guitar player who likes new/innovative/weird effects?

Moosapotamus has some wild and crazy pedal designs and alot of them are good for bass, even with sound clips.  I've built a few things from there - http://www.moosapotamus.net/THINGS/things.html

In all seriousness, the Danelectro Sitar Swami is one of the coolest pedals I've used on bass. It use to be a regular thing in one of my bands; combined with reverse delay, it made awesome soundscapes.

Hmmm...  I've never heard the sitar swami.  I'll suggest it to him.

I like sub octaves like the Boss OC-2 on bass, and whammy pedals too.  The Foxx tone machine (with the octave off) is a pretty good bass fuzz, for crazy leads. The line 6 FM-4 is pretty crazy actually, with the synth sounds and sequenced filters.

Lot's of Tim Escobedo's "Circuit Snippets" would be fun for bass, like the PWM (nintendo sounds), Uglyface, Simple square wave shaper made simple.

Ooo, JC maillet's Nyquist Aliaser or other aliaser, for making bass sound like a bad mp3.
