Hi folks!
I've got a friend of mine who asked me to build him a nice overdrive/distortion (not too gainy or fuzzy) pedal for modern kind of music, like pop and similar styles..so it has to be much versatile:icon_cool:.
He has got a Classic '60 tele (MiM) plugged into a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and he also has an ibanez Ts-9 and a Bsiab 2 (which I build for him ;D and he's really proud and happy with it) plus other 4-5 effects.
So, what do you suggest/recommend me to build ?

Thanks to all :D

I've built a Distortion+ and I find it pretty versatile from having the gain pot rolled off completely all the way up to full gain.  May be a little more gain than needed though.  I also like the DOD overdrive 250.
To those about to rock, we salute you.

I tried the distortion +  some time ago and I don't it's what he wants....any other suggestions ?
I find those effects to be very interesting :

OVD
Highway 89
Ross Distortion
MosFat Bastard
Red Llama
OD-250
Colorsound overdriver
Maxon OD808 - OD880
MXR Zakk wylde OD
Sparkle Drive
Sprinkle Drive
..and other pre-amp emulations at ROG

..which do you think fits my/his needs ? An od which steps also in distortion territory

I think the Ross Distortion, OD250 and the Zakk Wylde are all basically the same as a distortion +, so that gives you a few less choices.
The Colorsound Overdriver is a great pedal but it's not an overdrive/distortion pedal, it's more of a booster until you turn the gain up and then it's more of a fuzz.

thanks :D
So which would be good as a distortion which can become an OD on lower gain settings ?

Have you had a look at the bluesbreaker distortion over at tonepad?

Bluesbraker, Highway 89 or maybe the Guv'nor. Let him listen to a few sound samples. I guess there's plenty of them available for all these pedals around.

I'm far from expert on this, since I'm still auditioning circuits for "perfect," but I do like the Red Fuzz an awful lot.  Good gain, great EQ balance, good clarity.  Nice, simple circuit.  The Hwy 89 is nice, too, though it sounds best to me with the guitar volume rolled back.  Rolled back, it's got outstanding clarity and realistic sound and feel.  Full open, it sounds and acts like a fuzz, imo.

Hi, I think it depends a lot on his specific setup (guitar, amp) and on the styles he plays....

My experience: I made a RedLlama few months ago, tryed on the Marshall 2203 at rehearsal and didn't like it at all...  too thin and sterile..
Last week I joined a new band, we play franz ferdinand, strokes and so on... I gave the Llama a new chance with the amp I built (Plexi inspired, pics to come  ;)) and just loved it! the red llama was just perfect in that setup!

So I guess it's difficoult for us to give suggestions without more details, and it wouldn't be objective anyway....

another really good sounding OD-dist is ROG's THOR, very versatile, I loved it for that kind of dirty-clean sound, I'm not using it anymore since I made the amp..
Only those who attempt the absurd will achieve the impossible.
