maybe its because im using a solid state jc-120,or maybe my idea of good tone is different then most, but ive tried all the chips,808 carbon comps, replaced the non polar electrolytics with metal film, tantalums too. tried the more/less gain mod and of course the more bass cap.true bypass switch too.
in the end, with my jc-120,the bone stock re-issue ts9 with a true bypass switch sounds best to my ears.and i a/b'd my stock one with my modded one. maybe it is the closest tube amp simulation through a solid state amp.the true bypass mod alone seems to add some clarity. and the stock chip sounds fine to me.
the other mods really do add a sort of high-fi clarity and sound nice through my musicmaster bass amp, but im gigging with the roland amp.
anybody else have a similar experience,or am i alone in the wilderness with the crickets and coyotes?

I don't know if I would prefer it over a modded one but I love the sound of my stock TS9 so much that I've never even thought of modding it or making a DIY one. Perhaps you're not alone in the wilderness :)

ayayay!

Actually that's a thought provoking question.  One thing I'd have to wonder is what year/era it is.

I modified my friends TS9.  Both stock and modified had their strengths and weaknesses.   What was funny was we were trying to make it sound like my modified TS5, and we just flat out couldn't.  Same opamp, same tone mods with same values, then other values... It just never sounded as good as my TS5.

So, he ebayed it.   :icon_lol:

both of mine are brand new re-issues. im using the stock ta75558 chip in the stock one and a 1458 in my modded one.
i think the big difference in the stock one is it sounds alot more compressed while the modded one is more transparent.
so with such a clean nuetral amp like a jc,you really need to get all of your tone from the pedal as your not going to drive any power tubes or surpass the amps headroom.
i was really surprised to find i much prefer the two stock output resistors to the 808 values with the jc.
i would imagine folks would prefer a stock ts9 with a modeling amp or really any solid state amp.
im really a tube amp guy, but playing ivory coast reggae really requires a loud, bell like clean tone like the jc's have.

I recently modded a Maestro/Daphon OD-60 (a very close TS clone), and I think doing alot of the common mods helped alot. It sounded really bland with the stock circuit, but maybe that's just that particular thing - it wasn't exactly like a TS, just very very close.

A TS is as limited in use as a Klon, it will work with your equipment well or it will not.

Often I use my old unmodded TS-9 or TS-808 with a vintage Strat and a BF-amp and it sounds very good. With my SRV Strat and the TS it sounds horrible, to many mids that can't be filtered out.

IMHO if you fetch a very good sounding unit and it maches yout equipment there's no need for modding. If the TS will not deliver a satisfying sound modding will not cure it at all. Modding/finetuning can turn a new good sounding TS into an superiar sounding unit, but a bad sounding TS will always be a bad sounding TS even after a mod.

If you need more flexibility buy a Barber LTD and tweak it to your liking, or B-Monkey or whatever you like. There are so many cheap good/better sounding TS-type clones in the shops today, so IMHO there's no need for modding an original.

TL072 slight difference with TL082 but you can use it.
