Hi all:

I am listening to some early Pink Floyd right now, and that Echorec sounds oh so good. I was wondering if anyone knows much about the internals of these devices. I am looking for

- how the different playback heads are selected
- the distance (in inches, cm, milliseconds) between the playback heads
- the attenuation of the playback heads when put into swell mode
- how the feedback path is calculated (i.e. which head(s) in which modes)
- can the motor speed be adjusted for different echo times?

Any info would be gratefully received. If anyone knows of any Echorec impulse responses, that would be good as well.

Thanks,

Sean Costello

OK, I found a YouTube demo (the first video that turns up d searching for binson echorec), and it sounds like the heads are evenly spaced apart. Is this standard for multi-head delays?

This would be pretty emulate with a multi-BBD setup, or multi-PT3299 whatever that chip is - just cascade them, and read the output after each chip.

Its such a rare bird my guess is most people don't have any experience with one. There are some good pages on them though.

http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=74 - as far as Pink Floyd and Echorecs go, this is the ultimate article AFAIK.

You can also find some schematics on SchematicsHeaven and duchert.de, though I don't see any details about heads placement on them:

Thanks for all the help, people! All of the posts were useful. The echotapper.nl website has the head timing values, and the schematics will give me the head amplitudes - or close enough for my work.

Great!

If you're making a DIY Binson EchoRec project, would it be too much to ask to show us project documentation & some building notes once you're finished?

Thanks in advance!
