Cheap down and dirty mic preamp circuits?

Can I use  a clean boost (al la AMZ's) or even an LPB1 as a boost for a cheap microphone?  My buddy plays clawhammer banjo and likes to stick a cheap-o mic with a standard 1/4 inch jack inside and wants a bit more level for going into whatever amp is at hand.  I could make one of the above with bench parts and put it on a belt clip for him.
Thanks, oh learned teachers.

i would just suggest giving it a try...if it doesnt work, then you have a really cool guitar boost.  you know, if he's using s mic with a 1/4" the impedance is going to be off....i would suggest using a direct box and run an xlr to whatever mixing console he's using...  there's also a great little circuit out there called the 5 dollar mic preamp...

i think this would more than suffice and would be tailored more for mics...

Yeah, I've used a stock DIY LPB-1 as a mic preamp for a Shure SM58. You might want to increase the value of the 2M2 pulldown resistor at the input for a condenser mic - say 10M.
