I'm building an echobase and am looking for a transistor that could replace the bc560 to save on shipping from another supplier.  Any suggestons?  Thanks

People have reported that a 2n5087 works fine. Pretty much any high gain PNP should work.

the specs call for a 2n5089 and a bc560...so could i just use 2- 2n5089's?

No, a 2n5089 is an NPN transistor, the one in the BC560 position needs to be a PNP.

Hello,
with the BC-type you have to look at the suffix:
BC560-A has a gain (Hfe) of 110-220, BC 560-B is 200 - 450 and the BC560-C will give you between 420 and 800.

BC 557, 558 and 559 are essentially the same pnp's (max voltage and/or frequency limits might differ, but this usually is not relevant, e.g. assuming you are operating at 9 or 12 volts and amplifying audio frequencies). BC560 is lower in noise than these other pnp's.

There used to be a  useful cross reference guide here ( www.ee.washington.edu/circuit_archive/parts/cross.html ) but now that address gets you to the NTE cross reference guide. Using that, when you search for the BC560, 2N5087, or a 2N3906 the same NTE159 comes up as a replacement for all. So that would imply at least any of those four would work in the circuit.
