Headphone amp issues

I recently built this little headphone amp. Love the sound of it.

Changes I made:
Instead of the SPST switch for gain I added a pot. Also on the unused tab, ran some clipping diodes (4 914/4148s) going to another pot - which attaches the diodes (via the pot) to ground.
Gets a nasty fuzz (gated).
Still sounds great, lots of volume.

Then, I wanted to add a tone control. In is straight from the guitar input (before the 4.7 cap).
Out connects to the 4.7 cap.

Now the problem. Loss of volume. It was fine before I added this tone control. I did get a little volume loss adding the clipping diodes, but it was minimal.

So I figured I needed a gain recovery stage. I tried the LPB-1 but having problems with it. Lots of nasty noise. Maybe I did something wrong in my wiring, I dunno Will go over it again tonight.
I wired in into multiple places (final output, after the tone control, etc.)

Anyway...I figure I have 2 options, find/design a different recovery stage (a clean one), or a better tone control. But I figure with any tone control of this type, I am going to get some signal drop.

Any ideas?

Thanks

like on this
instead of putting it after, you could put it before the tone control (id then add the 10k volume too)
id use some kind of fet pre amp instead of an lpb, they would probably be alot cleaner for this

Forgot to mention...
I did add a volume pot, but I put it at the output.
Like the Jordan Bosstone has the level control at the output. Thats why I put it there.

BTW...how easy would this be to put in a stompbox format cause I really love that gated fuzz sound I get?

well, remove it, or replace it with a 25 ohm rheostat (like on the little gem) (in stompbox form the pot shouldnt be a problem, but what value is it?_
this as stomp?? easy
just treat the circuit like any other effects pedal
several effects pedals use the 386 in there circuitry and they work fine
the SMOKEY AMP for example, can be used as a stand alone, with a cab or into ANOTHER AMP as a distortion pedal

Right now its 5k (its all I had laying around), but it doesn't start doing anything until near the end. So a 1k - 2k would probably be the best value here.

Oh, and I also looked at the schematics section here at JFET amps. Found one that uses an MPF102.
Strange, cause the other day when I was in Radio Shack, I saw an MPF102 and bought it although I had no idea what I was going use it for :)

Been reading the datasheet on the LM386 today. Damn, I'm getting loads of ideas now :)
