I was wondering if the regular transistors (silicon?) that most schematics show can just be swapped for Germanium transistors or if there is some more intensive modding that needs to be done.
For example...
I've built and LPB with a 2n5089 transistor. Is there a direct replacement germanium I could use?

Most circuits would need some tweaking, some none, some extensive.  Depends on the bias scheme, relate Hfe for the devices, and how accurate the voltages need to be for the circuit.

Ge's have different requirements from one to the next of the same part#.
Start with the Austin Treble and Bass Booster article at GEO for learning how to work with Ge biasing.
The Rangemaster is the 'ol standard', many folks like a more reasonable bias than the RM's 7v of 9v supply on collector, and prefer a larger value input capacitor to let a little bass in.
Both are fine boosters, LPB is easier to get consistant high performance from.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
